Paper Mache Turkey Tom

Turkey Tom

Happy Thanksgiving, all!  Turkey Tom here, parading around in my Christmas gear and gobbling about how I was made.
  • My creator crafted me from two balloons taped to both ends of a toilet paper roll.
  • Then she taped two cups from an egg carton to my head for eyes and rolled a small cone from newspaper to make my beak.
  • My tail feathers were fashioned out of cereal box cardboard and curled at the edges to look more realistic.
  • After that she covered me in a thin layer of torn strips of gluey newspaper and let me dry for a day or two.
  • She repeated with another layer of newspaper and when I was completely dry a couple days later, she painted me with a thin coat of brown paint.
  • She could have laid the paint on thickly or used different colors, but she decided she like the look of the print coming through the paint.
Here are more pictures that show all of my sides.

Now that I’ve drummed up your attention by seeing my backside and all…you’ll be glad to know that I really am a fun and easy craft to make–for kids and adults alike.  Even though I am partial to turkeys, (smile), you and your children could make any critter anytime of the year!  Plus with a few alterations and a few bags of candy, I could become a super birthday pinata!
So the next time you see the newspaper starting to pile up, consider crafting your own paper mache creature(s) just for fun or to add to your next holiday or event.

Gobble, Gobble!
